DHAKA: The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) has given the design and construction license for the construction of Rooppur nuclear power plant to Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA). Through this, Bangladesh has become member of the World's Atomic Energy Club (World Nuclear Club).

BAERA chairman Naim Chowdhury handed over the license to BAEC chairman Dilip Kumar Saha at a program held at Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka on Saturday. The official said in a statement. Science and technology minister Yeafesh Osman was present as the chief guest at the license transfer ceremony. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) guidelines, there is a need to obtain this license before the original construction begins.

Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (DAERA) has given all the safety standards and guidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency and the existing laws and regulations of Bangladesh in order to allow this. In addition, expert opinion has been taken by technical opinion and review of all regulatory documents through local and manual manpower, including the Russian Federation, India International Atomic Energy Association.

Science and Technology Minister said that the main work of Rooppur nuclear power plant will be started through this license. Bangladesh has entered the club of countries producing nuclear power since today. The minister also said that the work is being done with the utmost importance in building this power plant. It will also increase our national confidence that Bengalis can generate electricity from atoms.

The agreement was signed between the government of Bangladesh and Russia on December 25, 2015 for Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. According to the agreement, the construction of 2,400 MW power plant will cost more than one lakh crore rupees (US $ 2165 million).

In October 2013, the foundation stone of this power plant was established in Ruppur, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Earlier, the government signed a framework agreement with Russia in 2010 and two countries signed a deal to build a nuclear power plant in Bangladesh in November 2011.

In the current year, the main work to build the power plant is to begin. The first unit of one thousand 200mwatt power will be operational in 2022 and the second unit of the same power will be opened in 2023. The government will first understand the second unit in 2023 and the second unit in 2024.

Chairman of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Control Authority chaired the meeting, Prime Minister's Economic Affairs Adviser Mashiur Rahman, Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Science and Technology AFF Ruhul Haque and Chief Coordinator on SDG Abul Kalam Azad, Acting Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology Anwar Hossain, Russian Regulatory Organization Rostankar Deputy Chairman Alexei Ferhnatov and Project Director of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Shawkat Akbar was present.
