Dhaka: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said “Our children are very talented. But besides taking education they have to do sports to keep them fit.”

The Prime Minister said this in the speech of the University Grants Commission's Prime Minister Gold Medal on Sunday (February 25th).

Describing the contribution of the Awami League government in education sector, Sheikh Hasina said, "Before coming to power, I noticed that the interest of science education among the students of our country is less. So, in power, we took various initiatives to spread science education. But due to the change in government, it was dropped. Our effort will be takeing the country forward by emphasizing education. There is another problem in our country; no allocation is given in the research. When we came to power first we started to allocate budget for research. Afterwards, we are allocating regular studies, which we are enjoying today.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, "With our different steps, the current literacy rate in the country is 73%. Our aim is not to be illiterate even in a country. We have taken various initiatives to provide better education to the people of our country. Many parents cannot study their children. So we made free up to primary and secondary education. In other words, I have completely free education. The students are given free books. As a result, the burden of purchasing books from parents has decreased. Besides, meritorious students are given scholarships. Various steps are being taken to increase interest in education.

The Prime Minister said there was only one medical university in 96 countries. We have now taken initiative to gradually create a university in each district. We give importance to agriculture. We'll arrange for the boys in our house to study at home.

He said, our children are brilliant from the children of different countries of the world. They have the opportunity to practice and develop their intellectual development. We have taken various initiatives for this.

The Prime Minister handed over gold medals to 265 students as the chief guest at the ceremony. Presided over by University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman Professor Abdul Mannan, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid was present as special guest and Secretary of Secondary and Higher Education Department of Education Md. Sohrab Hossain UGC member professor said the welcome speech. Dil Afroza Begum

It is to be noted that UGC has given 'Prime Minister Gold Medal' as the recognition of achieving highest number or CGPA in the respective faculties at the university level. At present, 265 students are given prime gold medal, among them 124 students in 2015, 141 in 2016.
